Would you like to know more about it?
The chronicle of Hin Ta and Hin Yai
The legend of Hin Ta and Hin Yai is a story of both tragedy and hope. According to a sign near the rocks, it tells of an elderly couple named Ta Kreng and Yai Riem who lived with their son in Nakhon Si Thammarat. When their son reached adulthood, they decided it was time for him to marry. They set sail for the neighboring province of Prachuap Khiri Khan to ask for the hand of Ta Monglai’s daughter. However, their boat was caught in a storm and they were unable to swim to shore. They died at sea and turned into rocks as a testament to their true intentions for the would-be bride’s parents. The rocks still stand there today.
The scenery from Hin Ta and Hin Yai, as well as the surrounding area, is breathtaking, with views extending across the sea to nearby islands. A small white-sand beach near the rocks is not suitable for swimming but provides a refreshing spot to cool your feet after exploring the island. The crystal-clear waters here often reveal colorful marine life.
Hin Ta and Hin Yai are located near Hua Thanon, a traditional Muslim fishing village. The area is characterized by lush plantations and buffalo fields, offering a glimpse into Samui’s past before tourism. Visitors who forget their cameras can purchase postcards of the rocks and other Samui attractions from vendors in the area. Souvenirs, drinks, and snacks are also available for purchase.
